AEG: More Mindful Entertainment

“It is not only an expectation from our employees, guests and sponsors, but sustainability to AEG means innovation and operational efficiency. We were the first in our industry to focus on sustainability, and it’s made us more profitable and competitive.”

SCOTT BOSARGE
Senior Vice-President of Business Services, AEG

The Global Challenge

In the entertainment industry, bright lights are key to a successful experience — but energy is not the only resource with significant consumption at entertainment or sporting events. AEG needed the visibility, strategy and services to buy energy cheaper.

As an innovator, AEG is setting the standard for sustainable entertainment venues. They were the first in the industry to launch a sustainability report, “AEG 1EARTH”, and energy services. They also recognized they needed guidance on how to set realistic sustainability goals and more efficient ways to buy energy, which is AEG’s second biggest line item.

The Global Solution

Our partnership started with strategic procurement services for gas and electricity. Our strong market intelligence and commodities expertise enables AEG to leverage better rates across 59 facilities. We also manage the purchase of green power and implementation of distributed energy resources at the site level.

Next, we help AEG increase overall efficiency and reduce total resource consumption. We partnered in developing sustainability objectives for 2020 and deployed the technology to monitor progress against goals.

AEG now has the tools they need to answer questions such as: “How much electricity does an arena use?” and “How much water is used during a game or concert?”

Eight years of environmental performance metrics from all four corners of the globe have been centralized on Schneider Electric’s Resource Advisor. Using a single database AEG is able to benchmark consumption, measure results of efficiency projects and report on overall performance. Down the line, it gives AEG a much clearer vision over their whole network of venues, in addition to helping them reduce their environmental footprint and save considerably on costs.

“These analytics resulted in Citizens Bank Business Arena becoming the first professional hockey arena to make hockey ice using recycled water. The arena now roughly runs on 85 percent recycled water, saving about a half a million gallons of water annually.”
