Climate Leadership Conference Highlights Successes

At the end of February, I was able to attend the Climate Leadership Conference, a collaborative effort of The Climate Registry, Association of Climate Change Officers (ACCO), Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and the EPA.  The conference provides an opportunity for annual exchange for addressing global climate change through policy, innovation, collaboration, and business solutions.  Representatives from various levels of government, academia, business, and NGOs were present at the event.

 While the overall theme of the conference centered on the acknowledgement that our current climate dilemma is indeed human-caused and that threats from this climate change are imminent, there was also an emphasis throughout the event on the upside: infrastructure resilience, collaboration, climate policy, and the sharing of successes.

 Although there remains a worldwide emphasis on mitigating climate change by limiting global carbon emissions, increasingly, organizations are moving to consider how they can adapt to climate change and its impacts.  This past week, talk at the UC Santa Cruz Climate & Policy conference surrounded not how to avoid the impacts of climate change but how to plan for and respond to these impacts—including drought, superstorms, chaotic temperature & weather fluctuations, ocean acidification, and ocean rise–which are already occurring increasingly frequently (consider the recent, devastating cyclone in Vanuatu).

 Recent collaborative efforts that were highlighted at the conference include Chevy’s Campus Clean Energy Campaign, a philanthropic effort by the car maker to support schools in reducing their carbon footprint and complex business transactions such as GM’s recent Mexican power purchase agreementannouncement.  Overall, 18 awards were issued during the event, including Excellent in GHG Management & Goal Setting awards given to three Renewable Choice clients: Capital One, CH2M Hill, and EMC Corporation.

 We’re pleased to work with these organizations and others to help them continue the fight against climate change, and to help our clients develop leading edge solutions to revolutionize the energy marketplace.
